The sawmill in Spearfish, South Dakota, is the largest producer of lumber in the Black Hills, with capacity to produce 120 million board feet of Ponderosa Pine lumber per year. Of that volume, 30% is dimension lumber and 70% is premium quality pine boards. The lumber and board grading at these mills follows the standards of the Western Wood Products Association. A variety of specialized package sizes are available for wholesalers and retailers. In addition, the mill sells Ponderosa Pine Pattern products of various widths and thicknesses.

At the same location, Pope & Talbot operates the Heartland Wood Pellet facility, producing premium fuel for wood pellet stoves. We make 36 thousand tons per year of this environmentally friendly heating fuel. Pope & Talbot recycles its byproducts (bark, sawdust, shavings, and wood chips) at the Heartland facility, and by selling them to outside manufactures.

The Spearfish sawmill obtains its timber supply from both public and private timberlands in the Black Hills region and participates in AF&PA's Sustainable Forest Initiative Program, reflecting our commitment to sustainable forests and environmentally friendly harvesting techniques.
